But if Bear Stearns was investigated, people might uncover a whole load
of bad news. While people can guess what this bad news might be, there
is no pressure to do anything about it at the moment, because it isn't
known officially. What if, for example, the pattern of Bear's trading
suggested that other banks were in the same boat? The Fed would then
have to rescue lots of banks instead of just one, whereas at the moment
we can just pretend everything is okay and hope banks recoup their losses
before people wake up. ("Bear" Stearns turned out to be a very
appropriate name, didn't it?)
I was thinking, the investigation into e-gold was very well timed, wasn't
it? With the dollar falling and inflation rising, this should have been
a time of opportunity for e-gold. Instead, Omnipay's bank account gets
shut down, and rumours start that e-gold is somehow fraudulent. Did
someone in the gubmint manage to see what was coming up on the economic
horizon, or is it just coincidence? I could believe either, to be honest.
