It might have something to do with the Visa Check/MasterMoney
Antitrust Litigation class action lawsuit.

A proposed settlement was reached and a merchant advisory issued on
Jan. 3, 2007.

Part of the settlement is that they must untie debit cards from credit
cards, and pay $3.05 billion over time into a Settlement Fund.

Given that, it is not surprising that they decided to shut down the
entire Maestro-branded program.
