I don't think the US government is that clever.
A more likely scenario is that someone in the DEA or EPA
seized a large chunk of gold for his own personal
benefit, so much that if e-gold accurately reported the
situation it would suffer a run. E-gold then attempts
to vainly curry favor with the government by ratting on
its customers. - an entirely hopeless endeavor, which
merely generates more justifications for further
seizures.
If so, this was a highly probable outcome of maintaining
a substantial presence in a country where officers of an
rapidly increasing number of government agencies are
empowered to seize assets for the benefit their own
particular branch of the organization, which in practice
tends to result the assets being applied to the personal
benefit of the person doing the seizing.
