There are 3 reasons that terrorists (and other assorted criminals and 
freebooters) prefer gold as a currency.

#1 It avoids big-brother scrutiny. James Bond laser beams aside, there 
is no way to track an ingot of gold, find out who gave it to who first 
and from where etc. etc.

#2 The dealers of the sort of merchandise they are mostly interested in 
(explosives, firearms, drugs to get their suicide bombers in the right 
mood, mercenary assistance, 3rd world safe havens) prefer gold as a form 
of payment, mostly due to #1 above.

#3 Ideologically. As most terrorists as we usually understand them 
(anti-Western groups with backing from the Eastern bloc or third world) 
are ideologically opposed to corrupt state-capitalist/bourgeoise 
democracies etc., they don't want to look hypocritical by paying their 
bills and supporters with credit notes from those same hostile entities!
