As many people have learned (e.g., Martha Stewart), through sad experience,
never, ever, talk with these guys. Absolutely no chit-chat. Even (or
maybe especially) if you have done nothing wrong, they will try hanging you
with your own words. Let your lawyer, even a those cheap-suit legal-aid
guys, tell them you have nothing to say.

I wonder whether it might be useful to become a good friend of the local
Sheriff, maybe even make him a silent partner (nothing underhanded), so
that when the feds show up he/she absolutely refuses to permit the raids on
his turf? What would happen in such a stand-off?

Again, even more reason not to answer....

Hard lessons to learn. When operating business that may be targeted, in
order to deal with these people, you must think as a spy or criminal, for
example:
- Do not use your PC for anything other than a VPN client into encrypted
partitions at offshore data havens (file space and bandwidth is
cheap) That way the PCs are cheap, have no proprietary data on them and
you can buy new ones and resume your business within a day after you are
released.
- Do not have any paper documents. Digitize them as they arrive and store
in a remote, encrypted, partition.
- Avoid U.S. bank accounts or at least keep only a minimal working capital
in them
- If you are really paranoid, have an offshore lawyer keep parts of the
partition access keys in a safe and instruct him that they can only be
turned over to you (you and/or your partners have the missing parts of the
keys) in his presence and not in the custody of law enforcement (a duress
clause).
